MULTIMODALITY (KRESS) Summary: Multimodality is a theory which looks at how people communicate and interact with each other, not just through writing (which is one mode) but also through speaking, gesture, gaze, and visual forms (which are many modes). Multimodality looks beyond language and examines these multiple modes of communication and meaning making. Multimodality: A Social Semiotic Approach to Contemporary Communication represents a long-awaited and much anticipated addition to the study of multimodality from the scholar who pioneered and continues to play a decisive role in shaping the field. KRESS, Gunther R. (2010). Multimodality: A Social Semiotic Approach to Contemporary Communication.

Kress and van Leeuwen on Multimodality Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen describe the concept of multimodality. They challenge their readers to consider the varied forms of meaning making that extend beyond language and enhance the semiotic process. For some time now, there has been, in Western culture, a distinct preference for monomodality. Kress’ multimodality theory adds analytic clarity for those interested in the power that images have in education. Kress suggests that education is an aesthetic experience greater than the sum of its parts (Cherryholmes, 1999; Kress, 2010). Gunther Kress 's scholarship on multimodality is canonical within social semiotic approaches and has a considerable influence in many other approaches as well (writing studies). Kress defines mode in two ways.
Multimodality challenges the predominance of language as the primary means of communication. It entails that communication happens across multiple modes, like visual, spatial, aural, gestural … been followed by detailed studies of multimodality in educational con-texts including research, for instance, on the evolution of image and writing in 20th- and 21st-century textbooks (Bezemer & Kress, 2008, 2009), the place of interest in authoring and interpreting student texts (Kress, 2010; Kress & van Leeuwen, 1996/2006), and the reification of Overview of multimodal literacy A multimodal text conveys meaning through a combination of two or more modes, for example, a poster conveys meaning through a combination of written language, still image, and spatial design. Each mode has its own specific task and function (Kress, 2010, p.

In fact, it is now no longer possible to understand language and its uses without understanding the effect of all modes of communication that are co-present in any text.(Kress 2000)
10. From a semiotic perspective, signs are a means by which people interpret and express meaning. The Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (1966) proposed that a sign is a ‘double entity’ consisting of ‘signifier’ (a ‘sound image’) and ‘signified’ (the concept it represents). Further perspectives have recently been furnished by multimodality, defined as the “use of several semiotic modes in the design of a semiotic product or event” (Kress and Van Leeuwen 2001), where a mode is ‘a socially shaped and culturally given resource for making meaning’ (Kress 2010).

Writing about multimodality requires defining “mode,” but this is notoriously difficult (cf. Forceville 2006, Elleström 2010).
